Chapter 12
Sasha was startled awake by the sound of Bailey crying. She bolted up the stairs and into the baby's room. She picked her up and cuddled her. "Shh…" she soothed. "It is OK sweetie." Bailey stopped crying immediately and snuggled against Sasha's shoulder. Sasha ran her hand over the baby's forehead and through her curls. 'She doesn't feel hot. I wonder if she is wet?' She took her over to her changing table and laid her down. She unsnapped her pajamas only to discover a completely dry diaper. 'She must have just woke up and got scared for some reason.' She took Bailey back over to her crib and laid her down. As soon as she took her hands away, Bailey started crying again. Sasha sighed and picked her up. 'Maybe she is hungry. She didn't eat any dinner.' She carried the baby downstairs. She looked at the clock on the kitchen wall. "What do you feed a 2 year old at midnight?" She asked opening the refrigerator.
"A half a bottle of warm milk usually does the trick."
Sasha turned around. "Brian! I didn't know you were home!"
"I just walked in the door and saw you heading for the kitchen." Bailey reached out for her daddy. Brian happily took her into his arms. "How is my baby girl?" He cooed.
Sasha poured a little bit of milk into a bottle. "Is it OK to microwave this?"
"I always do!" Brian replied with a light laugh. "About 45 seconds seems to warm it enough."
Sasha popped the bottle into the microwave and pushed the buttons. She watched as Brian whispered into his daughter's ear. 'That is one of the sweetest pictures I have ever seen!' she thought silently. She removed the bottle from the microwave, screwed the lid on tight and handed it to Brian. "She had a fever most of the day according to Sam. Her temperature was 100° when I took it the first time. She ate one of those Popsicles in the freezer and I gave her bath and some Tylenol. Her fever was down to 99.3° when I put her to bed."
"Sounds like you did the right thing." He handed Bailey her bottle, which she promptly began to drink from. "She runs fevers quite a bit. The doctor says it is nothing to worry about unless her temperature gets above 100°." He kissed the baby's cheek. "I used to panic when the kids had a fever above 98.7°! I have learned to ride it out though and just watch to see what else happens."
"That is the same thing John said when I picked the kids up."
"Fathers know best!" Brian said, removing the bottle from Bailey's hands. "Half a bottle and she is sound asleep."
"You look exhausted yourself Brian! Why don't I take her back up and put her to bed for you? There is pizza warming in the oven if you are hungry. I don't know how good it will be since it has been in there for a few hours."
Brian carefully handed Bailey over to Sasha. "Thanks Sasha. I am kind of hungry."
"Be back in a minute." Sasha replied leaving the kitchen.
