Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 13

Brian went over to the oven and removed the box containing the pizza. He turned off the oven and sat the box on the table, flipping open the lid. He sighed. "I'm just not in the mood to eat." He said closing the box. He put it in the refrigerator and headed upstairs. He checked on Tyler and then on Hannah. He went through the bathroom from Hannah's room and opened the door to Bailey's. He paused just inside the door and watched as Sasha tucked her in and kissed her cheek. 'Sasha is going to make a great mom.' He mused. The soft light from the lamp on Bailey's dresser highlighted her face. 'She is really pretty. Her kids will be gorgeous.' He crept into the room and peered into the crib at the sleeping baby. "They are so sweet when they are sleeping. I have always loved to watch my kids sleep."

Sasha turned toward him. "They are like little angels when they are asleep. Even monster kids are sweet when they are asleep."

"I really appreciate your staying with the kids tonight Sasha. I hope they weren't any trouble."

"Trouble? Your kids are great Brian! They don't argue with me. They don't hit and scream at each other. They say 'please' and 'thank you'. Babysitting for you is fun!"

Brian laughed. "I guess they pay attention more than I thought they did."

"I am available any time you and Leighanne need me. I like getting in 'mommy' practice!"

Bailey stirred in her crib and let out a small cry. Sasha and Brian both turned back around to the crib. Bailey didn't wake up though. Brian stroked her curls.

Sasha turned to Brian, "I think I had better head home."

Brian reached over and pulled Sasha into a hug. "I really do appreciate what you did Sasha." He whispered. He released her from his embrace. On impulse he leaned in and kissed her. He pulled back when he realized what he was doing. "Oh God." He looked at Sasha who was staring at him with a look on her face he knew he would never forget. She didn't look angry, she look confused and sad at the same time. "I'm so sorry Sasha!"

"It…it is OK." Sasha said closing her eyes and shaking her head. "It was just a kiss." 'A kiss that made my knees go weak and my lips tremble.' she thought silently. "Friends…kiss some times…It doesn't have to mean anything." She bit her lip and smiled at him. "I know you love your wife. I am not going to say anything. It was just a kiss." She looked down at Bailey and then back up to Brian. 'Is he crying?' She reached her hand out and placed it on Brian's arm. "Honest Brian. Don't sweat it."

Brian swallowed hard. He tried to blink back the tears stinging his eyes. He turned away from Sasha and sat down in the rocking chair beside the crib. He lowered his head to his hands and leaned forward.

A wave of panic swept over Sasha. She had an epiphany. 'Oh my God! Why do I have the feeling Tyler was right?'
