Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 14

Sasha walked over and knelt down in front of Brian. She didn't say anything at first. She just watched him while she contemplated what to say. Finally, she simply asked, "Do you want to talk about it?"

Brian inhaled deeply. He raised his head up and looked at Sasha. He ran his hands over his face, sweeping through his hair. He shook his head. "Its late Sasha. I am sure you want to get home and get some sleep. I'll be fine." He added. "I probably just need to get some sleep too."

"Come on." Sasha commanded, taking his hand and pulling him to his feet. He didn't resist as she led him back downstairs to the kitchen. She pulled out a chair and indicated he should sit down. She prepared 2 cups of tea and sat one in front of Brian, as she sat down at the table opposite him.

"Hot tea and conversation… Have you been hanging out with Howie or something?" He tried to joke.

Sasha smiled. "I just thought it might help you relax." She replied sipping from her cup. "And I don't know where you keep the hard stuff." She added, hoping to ease the tension a bit.

"Thanks." Brian smiled. He took a small drink of the tea. He let the liquid seep slowly down his throat. "You don't have to stay Sasha." He looked across the table at her.

"I know, but I want to. I think you need someone to talk to and I am a good listener."

"You're my employee Sasha. I'm not sure I should get into this with you."

Sasha placed her hand on top of Brian's. "I'm also your friend Brian… and friends are there for each other when things get tough."

Brian hesitated. He shook his head. "Thanks Sasha. I don't want to drag you into this mess."

"OK." Sasha arose from the table. She walked to the sink and washed her cup. She turned back to Brian. His head was in his hands. His shoulders were slumped forward in resignation. 'He is in so much pain. I wish he would just open up to me.' She sighed audibly. 'I can't make him talk to me. All I can do is let him know I am available if he needs to talk.' She moved back over to Brian and placed her hand on his shoulder. "I'm going to head home Brian. You have my number. Don't hesitate to call me." She gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze as she made her way out of the kitchen.

"Leighanne and I are separated."
