Chapter 21
Brian arose from the couch and refilled his glass. "Are you sure you don't want something to drink?" He asked again.
Sasha shook her head. "I'm fine thanks."
"Help yourself if you change your mind." Brian returned to the couch and slumped back down into his place next to Sasha. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Leighanne was in Toronto for another month but she flew home every weekend. She assured me she had ended the affair. We went to private counseling at church. It took some time but I forgave her. I still loved her very much and I thought she still loved me as well. We decided to have another child. I am not sure if that was the best idea we had ever had but I can't picture my life now without Bailey in it. I guess I thought if we had another child, it would prove Leighanne loved me and wanted to make our family work." He swirled the liquid in his glass around and took a long drink.
Sasha nodded. "I can't imagine your life without Bailey either but I understand why you question your judgment now."
Brian ran his finger around the rim of his glass. "I noticed a change in Leighanne 3 or 4 months before Bailey was born. Gradually, over the course of a month or so, she stopped wanting me to touch her. Allowing me to touch her." He whispered. "I knew she was sensitive about her body expanding as the baby grew so I didn't really press her about it. I kept telling her how beautiful and radiant she looked. How much I loved her…" He trailed off. He tipped his glass up and polished off the last of brandy he had poured. He set the empty glass on the table beside him. He closed his eyes and didn't say anything for a long time. Finally he continued his story. "After Bailey was born…" He shook his head and sighed. "After Bailey was born she went from one excuse to the next as to why she didn't wanna make love. First, she was nursing and her breasts were tender." He shrugged. "I believed that one because it happened with Tyler and Hannah too. Then it was she was too out of shape and she didn't want me to see her body lookin' like it did." He bit his lip and closed his eyes.
Sasha was at a loss for words. She had no idea what to say to comfort Brian. She wanted to hug him and hold him close and to tell him everything was going to be all right but she wasn't sure she should do that because she didn't believe the words herself. It seemed like there were hundreds of thoughts in her head and none of them were reaching her lips. She felt her eyes begin to sting as tears started flowing from her eyes.
