Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 35

"Daddy!" Hannah cried out leaping up from the table where she had been tearing the lettuce.

"Hi sweetie!" He knelt down and placed Bailey on her feet then picked up Hannah and kissed her cheek before setting her down as well. "Were you a good girl for Sasha today?"

"They were very well behaved!" Sasha assured him. "How's Bailey?"

"Mild ear infection but we caught it before it had a chance to get worse." He picked up a small amount of cheese. He knelt down beside Bailey. "Here Bailey. Do you want some cheese?"

The little girl shook her head and pushed his hand away. "No!" she stated firmly.

Brian popped the cheese into his mouth. "Mmmmm. You don't know what you're missin' baby girl." He picked her up and walked over to the refrigerator. He pulled out a bottle of apple juice. "Hannah, will you please get me one of Bailey's cups?" Hannah brought him a spill proof cup. He poured some juice into it and tried to hand it to Bailey.

"No!" she stated firmly pushing the cup away.

He set the cup on the counter. "You gotta eat something Bailey so you can take your medicine." He whispered to her. He went over to the cabinet and pulled out an envelope. "When all else fails, " he dumped the contents into a bowl and added water before popping it into the microwave. "there is always mac and cheese!" He set Bailey in her high chair and put the cup of juice on her tray. When the timer indicated the noodles were ready he removed them and rinsed them with cold water to cool them off before adding the cheese sauce and a little warm water. He set the dish in front of the baby and gave her a spoon. She looked at the bowl and then preceded to devourer the contents. "Like father, like daughter!" Brian laughed. He turned to Sasha. "What can I do to help out this little dinner party?"

"You want to slice the tomatoes?" Sasha offered as she added the sauce mix and water to the meat.

"I can do that!" Brian washed his hands, grabbed a knife, a plate and the tomatoes and sat down at the table by Hannah. "How is the lettuce coming Hannah?" He tried not to laugh as he looked at the huge pieces of lettuce in the bowl. "I think maybe you should make those pieces a little smaller sweetie!"

"Its hard!" Hannah declared.

"I'll help you in a minute sweetie." Brian offered.

"Thank you daddy!"

Sasha smiled to herself as she stirred the contents of the pan. 'I needed a day with a family.' She thought. 'This is good for me.'
