Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 36

Sasha put the lid on the frying pan and reduced the heat to allow the sauce to thicken. She washed her hands. "It looks like Tyler is about done grating the cheese. How about if I finish grating the lettuce while you separate these shells?" She said handing Hannah a package of corn tortillas.

"What are these?" Hannah asked.

"Taco shells." Sasha replied.

Hannah shook her head. "Those aren't taco shells. Taco shells are hard and crunchy."

"These are a different kind. I tasted them when I lived in Mexico and I liked them better."

"I didn't know you lived in Mexico Sasha." Brian stated, taking Hannah's bowl and the grater from Tyler to grate the lettuce.

"I was only there for 3 months while I was in college." She answered as she poured a little corn oil into another frying pan. "It was a summer exchange program." She took the first tortilla from Hannah and placed it in the pan. As it warmed up, she folded it in half to form a shell. "Hannah, would you please get a plate and put a couple of paper towels on it so I can drain the shells?"

"That's cool. I jus' thought you learned to speak Spanish in school."

Sasha giggled as she removed one shell from the pan and started in on a new one as Hannah watched intently. "I barely speak Spanish anymore Brian! That was a long time ago!"

"It is still cool that you had the opportunity to experience another culture for awhile."

"I had a good time. The family I stayed with was really nice and luckily, they spoke enough English that we were able to communicate in both Spanish and English."

Brian glanced over at Bailey and noticed she had finished her macaroni. "Was that good Bailey?" He asked putting her bowl in the dishwasher. "You musta been hungry huh? You ate the whole bowl!" He said lifting her from her highchair and kissing her cheek. The little girl rubbed her eyes. Brian turned to Sasha. "She is pretty sleepy. I'm going to give her some of her medicine and put her to bed. She'll probably wake up at midnight but I don't think she will be able to stay awake more than 5 or 10 more minutes right now."

"OK. Dinner should be ready by the time you get back down here." She walked over to Bailey and placed a kiss on her cheek. "Goodnight Bailey."

"Thanks Sawsh!" Brian replied heading toward the upstairs.

Sasha glanced around the kitchen. "You two were a big help with dinner!" She exclaimed. "Why don't you go wash your hands and then you can set the table for me?"

"OK." The kids said in unison as they exited the kitchen for the closest bathroom.
