Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 37

"She was asleep before I could even get her pajamas on her!" Brian declared entering the kitchen.

"I'm sorry Bailey is sick again Brian. Poor baby!"

"Ya know, " he started as he took plates down from the cupboard and set them on the counter. "Tyler and Hannah were never sick when they were babies! They didn't even get colds! I guess we were pretty lucky with them."

"If it is any consolation, I was a very sickly child according to my family, a lot like Bailey. I had never ending ear infections too and I didn't suffer any lingering effects."

"Yeah, the doctor says it is something she will out grow eventually." He handed the plates to Tyler as he returned to the kitchen. "This smells so good Sasha! We haven't had homemade tacos in a long time!"

"I hope you like the shells. I didn't even think about buying pre-made ones."

"I'm sure they will be great." He assured her as he added utensils to the dishes she had placed on the table. "It is good to try new things. Right kids?" He prompted.

"Yeah." Tyler agreed taking a seat at the table. "These won't break like the other kind do." He answered politely.

Sasha smiled. 'Brian is doing a great job with his kids.' She thought as she took a seat next to Hannah.

"What do we want to drink?" Brian asked.

"Water is fine for me." Sasha replied getting up from her seat to assist Brian.

"I've got it Sasha." Brian said motioning her to sit back down. He handed her a bottle of water and a glass.

"I'll have juice." Tyler said putting in his order.

"Me too."

Brian poured two glasses of apple juice and handed them to the kids before grabbing another bottle of water and a glass for himself. He sat down next to Tyler. "Who wants to say grace tonight?" He inquired.

"I will." Tyler spoke up. He reached for Sasha and Brian's hands. "Thank you God for answering my prayers and sending us someone who knows how to make tacos."

Sasha tried not to giggle as Tyler's very original prayer of thanks continued.

"Please bless my mom and keep her safe in New York. Please bless dad and Hannah and please make Bailey well again. Please bless Sasha too 'cause she is pretty cool, even if she is a girl. Amen."

"That was…interesting Tyler." Brian replied, attempting to refrain from laughing. "Thank you." He reached for a taco shell. "Do you need help fixing your tacos Hannah?"

"Yes please. Meat and cheese only."

"I knew I liked you Hannah!" Sasha laughed. "That's how I like my tacos too!"

The little girl beamed as her dad placed two tacos on her plate. She picked one up and took a hesitant bite. "These are good Sasha! I like these shells!"

"See, it doesn't hurt to try new things does it?" Brian asked.

Hannah shook her head as she took another bite.

"So, what did you guys do with Sasha today?" Brian inquired in an effort to engage the kids in conversation.

Hannah's eyes grew wide. "Where do I begin?"
