Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 46

Sasha felt Brian's hands on her shoulders. She opened her eyes. He was standing in front of her, trying to catch her gaze. She blinked. "I'm fine." She whispered. "What happened?" She asked hoping Brian wouldn't tell her she had been screaming or crying.

"I was hoping you would be able to tell me that!" Brian stated stepping back away from her to give her breathing room. "I thought you had fallen asleep so I left you alone while I read to the kids and tucked them in. I came back to wake you up and you started shaking when I touched your arm so I wasn't sure what was happening."

"I'm sorry. I must have dozed off."

Brian stared at her for a brief moment. "Must have been quite a dream you were having." He stated taking her hands and turning them over so he could look at them. "You made your hands bleed."

"Wow!" Sasha attempted to feign surprise as she looked at her hands. "I don't even remember having a dream. The last thing I remember was Hannah asking me about my dollhouse."

Brian took a washcloth off the shelf and wet it. He picked up one of Sasha's hands and gently wiped the blood away and then moved on to the other one. "The cuts aren't deep." He assured her. "It looks like they have stopped bleeding."

Sasha eased herself off the counter. "I'm sorry Brian." She looked down at her feet and bit her lip. "I hope I didn't scare Hannah."

"She thought you were asleep. I didn't notice your hands until I tried to wake you up." He put his hand under her chin and raised her face up so he could see her eyes. "Are you sure you're OK Sasha?"

"I'm fine. I'm sorry if I scared you." She replied, averting his gaze.

"As long as you are OK." Brian said wrinkling his brow. "Why don't we go downstairs and sit down?"

Sasha nodded. "May I have some water please?"

"I'll get you some." Brian took her hand in his. He didn't want her to pass out and fall down the stairs. He wasn't sure what had just happened but he had a feeling Sasha did and for some reason she didn't want to tell him the truth. She was very pale and still trembling. 'Maybe she has a medical condition she's never mentioned?' He mused. "Sawsh, are you a diabetic?" He questioned as he guided her into the kitchen.

"No, why?"

Brian handed her a bottle of water. "I just thought maybe you were and you blacked out because your sugar level got too low or something."

"Thanks." Sasha said accepting the bottle from him. She tipped the bottle up and drained half of it in one gulp. "I don't have any hidden conditions that I haven't told you about." She lied. "I just fell asleep. I'm fine now. I'm sorry I scared you." She took another sip of the water.

"If you say so." Brian grabbed another bottle of water for himself. "Do you want to crash in the guestroom again tonight?"

Sasha shook her head. "I'm fine now Brian. Really!" She tried to assure him. "Let's just talk about what we were going to and then I will go home and you can have the rest of your weekend with your kids."

"OK." Brian led her toward the family room. He turned off the TV and sat down on the couch. "Where did we leave off?"

Sasha sat down opposite him and took a deep breath. "I think we were talking about when Leighanne would be home again."

"Right." Brian agreed. He took a drink of his water. "When Leighanne will be home again." He sighed.
