Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 83

"I called the voice mail on my cell. Eric had filled that box full as well." She closed her eyes. "I knew I had a long day ahead of me and staying at home was not a good idea. Eric was already calling me at home. I turned the machine off completely. I went to City Walk. I figured if I hung out down there and did a little shopping, I would be able to keep my mind occupied."

"You could have called us Sasha. Why did you think you had to deal with this on your own?"

"I don't know Trevor. I guess even though it seems like I was in control, I really wasn't."

"Go on. You still haven't answered my question."

"I had my cell turned on. I have caller groups set up. Eric is his own group. I have a hideous ringtone attached to his group so I knew it was him every time he called and I didn't answer the calls." She looked at her hands. "I know that enraged him more but I didn't know what else to do. I thought about turning it off but if I did that, no one would have been able to reach me and I didn't want to worry anyone. Kelli called later in the afternoon. Eric had called her wanting to know if she had heard from me. He told her he had left 'a couple of messages' at my house and on my cell and since I hadn't returned his calls and my machine didn't seem to be working at the time, he was worried about me."

"Did you tell Kelli how many calls he had made to you?"

Sasha shook her head. "I tried. She told me I 'need to grow up and get over' whatever is going on between Eric and I. She said he loves me and its not fair to exclude him from my life because of something he did years ago. I gave up."

"Another perfect opportunity to tell her what was going on and you chose not to. Sasha, you have got to tell Kelli what is happening!"

"Like I said, she wouldn't believe me if I told her what he did so I just told her I was out shopping and I would return his calls when I got home." Sasha wrinkled her brow. "That is when she told me Eric is coming to town next month. At first I thought I was going to be able to avoid him. I thought his visit would be while I was babysitting for Brian but its not. He arrives 3 days after Brian gets back from Europe."

"And I'm assuming, that piece of news is what started the downward spiral?" Trevor questioned.

Sasha nodded. "I went home as soon as I hung up with Kelli. I managed to occupy myself for a few more hours. I tried things from the list again. I did chores. I listened to music. I put on my swimsuit and laid out trying to get a little color. I don't know why I did that. It is not like anyone is ever going to know my stomach and my thighs aren't tan. I stayed occupied but the need didn't go away." She closed her eyes and bit her lip. "I don't know why I did it but I turned the answering machine back on. I didn't turn the ringers on, just the answering machine. It was a stupid thing to do. I should have left it turned off." She started wringing her hands nervously. "I heard the machine click on several times. I went into the kitchen to fix dinner. I wanted to make sure none of the messages were from someone other than Eric. They were all from Eric though so I erased them. I was cutting up some vegetables when I heard the machine click on again." She stopped talking and looked at Trevor and then at Ben. They knew what was coming next.
