My Heart Stays With You

Chapter 24

Howie filled 2 plates and joined A.J., Kevin, Brian, Caleigh and Samantha. "I hope I found food you can eat Miss Food Texture!" He teased kissing the top of Samantha's head as he set a plate of food in front of her.

Samantha smiled and raised her eyebrows at him. "If not," she said coyly "you can always feed me what you did last night."

Howie turned a deep shade of red. "Thanks for refilling my glass Sam." he said as he took a big sip of wine.

"Whoa D! Is there something you aren't telling us?" A.J. asked grinning ear to ear.

"No Bone. There is definitely nothing I am not telling you!"

"That kinda sounded like a Kevin sentence there Howie." Brian commented taking a sip of his drink as everyone laughed at his statement.

"What?" Kevin looked confused.

Samantha decided to get Howie off the hook. "Howie had a nice surprise of strawberries, bananas and oranges waiting for me. I love fruit!"

A.J. leaned close to Kevin "Yes, but what did they DO with that fruit?"

Kevin laughed and almost choked on a bite of food. He grabbed his glass and quickly downed the contents. "Good one Bone!" he said slapping A.J. on the back before getting up from his seat. "I think I need a refill. I'll be right back."

"So Samantha, how do you like Florida so far?" Caleigh inquired.

"I haven't really seen very much of it yet, but what I have seen is beautiful! I got in late last night and it was almost dark by the time I got to Howie's so I didn't see much." She took a bite of chicken before continuing. "Pollyanna took me to a great mall today though!" Everyone laughed.

"If there is a great mall, there really isn't anything else a city needs, right Sam?" A.J. added raising his glass to her.

"Right A.J.!" Samantha said raising her glass back at him.

Kevin rejoined the group. "Did I miss anything?"

"I was just about to ask Sam where she got her bracelet." A.J. answered. "Your silver bracelet is an AIDS awareness bracelet isn't it?"

"Yes, it is." Samantha replied quietly.

"Until there's a cure, the bracelet." A.J. recited looking at her. "May I look at your bracelet Sam?"

Samantha removed the silver band from her wrist and handed it to A.J.. "You are familiar with the bracelet A.J.?" Sam asked slightly taken aback by the phrase he had just quoted.

"There is a cure for AIDS." A.J. continued, examining Samantha's bracelet. "This bracelet is a reminder we are not there-yet."

"I am amazed A.J.! You just quoted the campaign word for word." Samantha looked at A.J. with a new respect. "You've obviously seen one these before." she said taking a sip of her wine.

"Not one with inscriptions on the inside Sam." he said handing the bracelet back to her. "Wear it in memory of those who have fought the war called AIDS." he looked Samantha "Fallen soldiers?" he asked.

Samantha bit her lip and swallowed hard. She reached to take the bracelet back from A.J. but was intercepted by Howie. "T.A.D. 8/23/63-4/23/89. B.R.C. 5/5/66-5/31/97 J.M.S. 10/22/70-12/24/98" he read aloud. He handed the bracelet to Samantha "Are those the initials of friends Sam?"

Samantha slipped the bracelet back onto her wrist. "Yes. Those are the initials my c..." she hesitated "of 3 people I knew, who um...passed away from AIDS." She reached for her glass again and hoped the subject would be dropped.

"You have probably met quite a few people with AIDS in your line of work, haven't you Sam?" Kevin inquired.

Samantha took a deep breath. "Not really Kevin. I was, I am...a pediatrician." She looked down at her plate and pushed it away, suddenly disgusted by the food on it. "I have met a couple of kids but, ummm, the people I knew best were not my patients." She glanced around the table. She felt like everyone was staring at her. "I do counsel teens as a result of my experiences though." she added quietly.

'This subject has made her pretty uncomfortable.' Howie thought noting the look on Samantha's face. 'I had better change the subject.' He looked at his friends and suddenly realized how much it must have hurt Sam to loose her friends. 'After loosing Caroline, I don't even want to think about loosing any of these guys.' He took Samantha's hand in his under the table and gave it a squeeze, silently telling her he loved her. "So," he started "Did everyone bring their dancing shoes?"
