Chapter 61
"She really is an amazing person isn't she?" Kait turned her head toward him as she continued to push Steven in the swing.
"Is there anything she is not able to do?" Howie asked looking back at her.
Kait laughed. "Failure isn't a word in Samantha's vocabulary." She glanced out past the playground and noticed Samantha removing her shoes and socks. "Watch this." Kait said pointing to Samantha and the girls.
Howie watched as Samantha ran a short distance, touched her hands to the ground and effortlessly completed two backflips before punching the ground one last time then rotating her completely straight body in flip, landing on her feet. "WOW!" He exclaimed. He turned to Kait "She isn't going to get hurt doing that is she?"
"No. Sam used to be a really good gymnast. She has lost some of her skills over the years but a layout is pretty easy."
"I'll say it again." Howie stated shaking his head. "Is there anything she can't do? I mean she is a doctor, she is a photographer, and she does great WebPages. I haven't seen her dance ballet yet but I have seen her dance at a club so I have a feeling she is excellent at that too. She swims like a fish and now I find out she does gymnastics as well."
"She has no musical talent whatsoever and don't ever let her touch a basketball or a football! I guarantee someone will get hurt if she does!" Kait laughed. "I know what you mean though. I have known her all of my life and she never stops amazing me." She pushed Steven in the swing. "Sam is my best friend Howie. She has always been there for me. She went out of her way to make sure I had a somewhat normal life despite the fact my dad had me on the same regimen their dad raised them on."
"Samantha's dad was pretty tough on her growing up wasn't he?"
Kait smiled. "Tough is an understatement!" She shook her head. "Everything Samantha is today, is due largely to the pressure my grandfather put her under when she was younger. He wouldn't settle for anything less than perfection." She watched as Samantha did another layout. "She helped me with my gymnastics when I was about Malia & Natalie's age." She briefly turned her head toward Howie. "Her dad set up a mini gym complete with a beam and bars for her to use outside of class. He used to make her practice until her arms ached and her calluses would rip. She still has scars if you look at her palms. She wanted to quit gymnastics but he wouldn't let her. He had some wild idea she was going to be the next Nadia. Sam had no intention of devoting that much work to the sport. She just wanted to have fun. She really began to excel at ballet about the same time. That is what got her out of gymnastics. Taryn danced too. That is probably the only reason her dad let her quit gymnastics. Taryn wasn't a good gymnast. She was a good dancer but nothing compared to Sam. Samantha has a passion for dance. Dancing became her escape when she was younger and she still relies on it to this day when she needs to clear her head." She looked at Howie. "Samantha is a beautiful dancer Howie. She could have done it professionally. It wasn't what her dad wanted her to do though."
'There is that name again. Who the hell is Taryn?' Howie wondered. "Does Samantha always do what her dad wants her too?" Howie inquired, wondering if Samantha's dad still had the influence over her he apparently did when she was younger.
"No. Not anymore."
"Kait," Howie decided to venture out on a limb since Sam's niece was being so open with him. "What did you mean when you said Taryn was probably the reason Samantha's dad let her quit gymnastics? Why would what Taryn did influence Sam's dad?"
"What do you know about Taryn?" Kait asked in a voice barely above a whisper.
'WHOA! Obviously this topic is taboo with her as well!' Howie was shocked by Kait's quick reaction to the name. "Samantha mentioned her once but she won't talk about her. I was just wondering who she is."
"Was." Kait said softly. She looked at her watch. "It is time to get back to my grandparent's house." She halted Steven's swing. "Are ready to go eat Steven?" The little boy nodded his head enthusiastically as she helped him climb out of the swing. She looked up to see Samantha and the girls, followed by the soccer participants coming towards them. "Howie, if Samantha is not comfortable telling you about Taryn then it isn't my place to do so either. I am sorry."
"Its OK Kait. I understand." He helped Kara off her swing just as the group came within earshot of them. 'That doesn't mean my curiosity isn't getting the best of me though.'
